a trip to Transylvania

One of the perks of living in Europe is that as long as we're here, we may as well see a little of it! :) And last week we did just that. Wednesday we left on a three-day road trip to Transylvania. Tim has been visiting Jonathan's family for a few weeks, and we wanted to go before he left yesterday, so our excursion was quickly put into plan and executed. Our design in going was to see the Peles castle, but we did lots of other fun stuff while we were gone.

Our trip took us into the mountains.
It was incredibly foggy almost
the entire way there.
Lari, Mom Heisey, and Tim
We stopped at the Bran Castle
(Dracula's castle) on the way.
Don't worry, Robin; I had some
garlic the day before.  ;-)

It wasn't huge or fancy as castles go,
but still very cool to see.

Vlad the Impaler must have been
an incredibly short man.

It had an incredible view!

What a beautiful stove in the dining room.

We stayed in the town of Rasnov, which had an old, ruined citadel high up on the mountain above it. We planned to go up and drive around it, but the fog kept us away.

Here you can see the citadel in front of us.
The view from our hotel balcony.
Wednesday evening after a traditional Romanian dinner we went bowling. It was super cheap and lots of fun!

The next day took us higher into the mountains to Peles.

How would you like to see this
out your window each morning?
The Peles Castle

It was beautiful and
definitely worth seeing.
We also toured the Pelisor Castle which was on the same compound. It was smaller and much less extravagant, but still beautiful and very homey.

We had a lovely trip to Transylvania, full of fun and cool things to see and do! Maybe you should visit sometime! :)

Jonathan and Kristy's December prayer letter

NEXT GENERATION PREPARATION

„But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;” I Corinthians 1:27

Praise the Lord for safe and uneventful flights to the States! Shortly after I arrived, Ambassador Baptist Church (Kristy’s home church) had an activity for the kids’ class. It was nice to spend some time there with the kids I taught while I was in Pittsburgh in May this year.

December is such a great time to ponder all that the Lord has done in the past year, and to take time to remember the Savior’s birth. It is almost overwhelming to think on all the Lord has done for me in the past year. I took responsibility for the literacy classes; Kristy and I got engaged; the Lord provided a house for us; the living room, bathroom, kitchen, and bedroom were finished; Kristy and I got married, and we are now in our new home in Romania! The Lord has done great things for us, and we are looking forward to what He will continue to do!

Kristy’s and my wedding was really perfect. Yes, there were several issues, like the furnace of the church breaking down the morning of the wedding, lots of snow preventing some of the guests from coming, and Kristy’s mom’s oven not working 2 weeks before the wedding (her mom was going to make our wedding cakes). But the Lord had this all planned, and everything really worked out wonderfully. It was a perfect day, the wedding was beautiful, and we had such a great time of fellowship with all of our relatives and friends that came. It was a wonderful day. We’re so thankful the Lord worked in our lives and brought us together to serve Him and His Gypsies in Romania!

Kristy is also now an official member of my home and sending church, Mount Zion Baptist Church in Denver, PA. It was a blessing for us to be able to visit with them and share a bit about our ministry and what we will be doing in Romania. It is encouraging to have them behind us, as well as all the other churches and individuals that pray for us and support us. We certainly don’t take it for granted, and greatly appreciate each one of you.

Right before I left for the States, the bedroom of our house was finished. The kitchen was supposed to be finished before I left, but it ended up being finished shortly before Kristy and I returned to Romania. The exterior of the house was also supposed to be finished, but was delayed a bit by the cold weather. Hopefully, that will be finished in the next 2 weeks. There is still much work and unpacking to be done, but little by little, we are getting things organized. Please pray that we will be able to get the rest of the work finished that needs to be done on the house.

Kristy and I were able to spend some time with her relatives in Wisconsin for the holidays before we left for Romania. It was nice to get to meet them and be welcomed to the family, as well as have the assurance of their prayers for us.

On December 27th, Kristy and I said our goodbyes to her family, and boarded the plane to Munich, and then to Timisoara. We arrived safe and sound Saturday evening, December 28th after very good flights. Our co-workers, the Freels, took care of the church while we were in the States. What a blessing it is to have someone trustworthy to take care of the flock and help bear the burdens of ministry!

My sister and brother-in-law, Joanna and Bruce White, and their family, came from Germany to spend a few days with our family in Romania. It is a blessing to be with them, and it has been a great time of fellowship and bonding with my three nieces and nephew. :o)

Kristy and I are adjusting to our new roles and lives here in Romania, and we are looking forward to what the Lord will do for us and through us among the Gypsies in Romania! We greatly appreciate your prayers!

Serving Him,

Jonathan and Kristy Heisey

Happy 2014!

Well, it's about time I posted some pictures. The events won't be in chronological order, as I don't have all the pictures from the wedding yet. So I'll start with posting some other things.

We had our 2nd wedding ceremony last night with the Gypsies. It was pretty informal. Jonathan's dad preached, Gina (a Gypsy lady) sang a song about Christ and His bride, and then we did our vows in Romanian. It was a bit of a challenge - I had to have the vows said slowly so that I could remember what to say. Any more than a few syllables and I couldn't remember what the first one was by the time we got to the last one! :)

Below are some pictures. Jonathan did kiss the bride, but apparently the camera shot it too late. :) Afterwards we had some dessert and juice.

After our service with the Gypsies, we had dinner and then went to a New Year's Eve fellowship. We had a fun time, and I even got to play several rounds of Round Robin! Shortly before midnight, we all went downtown to watch the fireworks. Happy 2014!

"How great is thy goodness..."

I was reading Psalm 31 in my Bible last night before I went to bed.  Verse 19 states, "Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men!"  The context of the psalm is David's trust in the Lord because of all his enemies.  I don't have many enemies... but the truth of God's goodness is still the same.  And He has been so good to us this week!

This is what we had up until a few days ago:

a very small outhouse

complete with mosquitoes and mice falling from the ceiling!
We had a bathroom, but all it had was a tub:
It wasn't quite finished...

...but at least it we didn't have to tile it!
But thank the Lord, we now have a toilet and functioning septic system!
The lid was broken during installation, so it will need to be replaced.

The tub, shower, and hot water heater were already there.

The refrigerator and electric burners will be moved once the
kitchen is finished.  :)
See what else David has to say in this psalm:

In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust. (v.1)
Thou art my rock and my fortress. (v.3)
Thou art my strength. (v.4)
I trust in the LORD. (v.6)
I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble. (v.7)
But I trusted in thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my God. (v.14)
Blessed be the LORD: for he hath shewed me his marvellous kindness in a strong city. (v.21)
Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD. (v.24)

We didn't know if the bathroom would be functional before we got married... but praise the Lord for His mercy in allowing it to be finished!  He truly has done great things for us.

And we'll still keep the outhouse for now.  You never know when an emergency might arise!  :)
